Chlorine dioxide is a chemical combination of an acidic and an alkaline raw material with the empirical formula ClO2.

The uses of chlorine dioxide are based on its oxidative effect. It is often used instead of chlorine because it forms less toxic or unhealthy chlorinated organic compounds when reacting with organic substances.

In Germany, Section 11 of the Drinking Water Ordinance, as well as a list of substances from the Federal Ministry of Health mentioned therein, regulate which substances may be added to drinking water and thus which procedures for drinking water disinfection are permitted.

The list also lists worksheets W 224 and W 624 of DVGW (German Association for Gas and Water) for chlorine dioxide. The manufacturing processes described in the worksheets are used to manufacture chlorine dioxide.

The approval applies to the entire EU, but each country has country-specific provisions.

Chlorine dioxide is used, among other things, to disinfect water. This prevents biofilm, which in turn is the breeding ground for Legionella. It can also kill other bacteria and viruses.

Chlorine dioxide is used in sewage treatment plants, hospitals and other medical facilities, in cooling circuits, boiler water, plant technology, food industry, agriculture, building management, wells, air conditioning technology.

Chlorine dioxide is available in small containers for manual addition. As a rule, however, chlorine dioxide is introduced into pipes and vessels using dosing technology.

Chlorine dioxide that is injected into the drinking water circuit must be dosed in accordance with the Drinking Water Ordinance
(0.3 mg per 1 liter of water at the first point of use) When using in the cold water circuit, the use of chlorine dioxide must be registered. Depending on the water load, it is determined whether it can be used temporarily, at what intervals or even permanently.

Chlorine dioxide is allowed as a finished solution Not be transported. As a rule, either two liquids, a tablet and a liquid or a powder and a liquid are transported in separate containers and mixed on site in a specified ratio.

The durability can vary a lot. It depends on the manufacturing process. Our chlorine dioxide is stable for 3 months in the finished solution and unmixed in the unopened containers for approx. 2 years.

If chlorine dioxide is used properly, it is less harmful to nature and humans than hydrogen peroxide or chlorine, or hyperchloride.

When chlorine dioxide breaks down, water, oxygen and table salt remain, so it's biodegradable. This is not the case with most other substances.
