"In the course of demographic development, the proportion of older people in the population is increasing. Thus, by the year 2030, the number of people aged 65 and over is expected to increase by one third to over 22 million (29% of the total population).

This will also increase the number of people in need of treatment.

The immune system of this against the healthy normal population defensive weakened people tends to be required by medical, some oncological treatments - u. a. with cytostatic agents in the outpatient area - additionally weakened.

Persons with a particularly high risk of infection

"It has been shown that patients with immunosuppression, eg. After organ transplants, in malignant tumors, after administration of drugs that are used in the treatment of inflammatory diseases application or under prolonged therapy
cycles with corticosteroids have a significantly increased risk of developing a legionellosis.

Statements from experts
“Each year, 1.75 million nosocomial infections are diagnosed in Europe; as a result, 10 percent of the people affected – which makes nearly 175,000 – even die from their infections.  Increasing age and the body’s limited immune defense increase the risk of acquiring infections in hospitals.”

(Quote from Prof. Dr. J. Peter Guggenbichler, Clinic for Children and Adolescents at the University Hospital of Erlangen)

“German hospitals and nursing homes research into solutions to implement the best hygiene standards” (Quote from DGKH, German Society for Hospital Hygiene, publications by Dr. Klaus-Dieter Zastrow).

In addition to their professional services, hospitals and nursing homes nowadays also distinguish themselves by emphasizing their hygiene standards which are available for assessment on public websites and are a selection criterion to find the best facilities.
